The Herb Society of America is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.  Begun by handful of Boston women in the 1930s, the Society originally worked with researchers at Harvard University. Over time, this group expanded its influence with public gardens in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.  Eventually the Society grew chapters nationwide.

By the 1980s, HSA had grown considerably and moved its headquarters to Kirtland, Ohio, adjacent to the renowned Holden Arboretum. Additional infrastructure gave HSA stability and organization. Most recently it has been invigorated with new leadership and a recommitment to mission.
